QB Everett Golson to rejoin Notre Dame for bowl practices

You won’t see Golson under center in Notre Dame’s bowl game, but he’s preparing to rejoin the school.

Everett Golson’s return to Notre Dame for the 2014 season appears to be right on schedule. At a press appearance on Tuesday, head coach Brian Kelly noted that a decision on Golson’s readmission was close at hand, and with that could come a return to the team for bowl practices.

Here’s more from Keith Arnold of NBCSports.com:

During Brian Kelly’s weekly press conference, the Irish head coach spoke about Golson’s return to the football team, with the head coach confirming the plan to have Golson’s return for bowl practice.

When that exactly begins is still up for debate. Kelly acknowledged that Golson’s application for readmission is in to university brass, with the junior targeted to return to class in January.

“That application process has been submitted from what I know,” Kelly said Tuesday. “And decisions relative to admissions happen in middle of December.”

The Fighting Irish have been without their starting QB this season after watching him get dismissed from the university for academic misconduct in May 2013, which has meant a hefty dose of Tommy Rees under center as the Irish have gone 7-3 thus far. And while Rees isn’t bad, it’s pretty obvious the Irish have been wishing it was Golson back there for them all year.

So while Golson’s return to practice for the bowl process -- if allowed by the university -- does not mean he’s actually playing for Notre Dame whenever the bowl game comes around, at the very least it signals that there have been no further setbacks in this process and Notre Dame is welcoming its signal-caller back as quickly as possible. No drama is a good thing. It’s what Notre Dame wants.
