The Texas Longhorns (8-3, 7-1 Big 12) kept their hopes of a Big 12 co-championship alive with a 40-16 Thanksgiving Day win over Texas Tech. The Longhorns were led by 128 rushing yards from halfback Malcolm Brown. Texas Tech (7-5, 4-5 Big 12) ends its regular season with five consecutive losses.

Things started with some promise for Texas Tech, as the Red Raiders' second drive of the night ended in a 51-yard touchdown run on a fake punt. Texas took command from there, though, scoring twenty unanswered points highlighted by a 47-yard touchdown pass from Case McCoy to Mike Davis. Tech got a field goal as time expired on the first half, but the Longhorns held a ten-point lead at the half.
Both teams lost key defensive players early in the game. Texas linebacker Steve Edmond was taken out by a vicious first-half block, and left the game with an apparent rib injury.
Play was stopped in the first half when Tech defensive back Bruce Jones suffered a head injury after running head-first into Malcolm Brown’s knee. Jones was taken off the field on a backboard, but was moving his extremities while being treated.
A 51-yard drive extended the Longhorns’ lead to 17 early in the third quarter, and another McCoy touchdown connection with Davis made it 34-10. The Red Raiders needed just two minutes to score, but a two-point conversion attempt fell short, and time had effectively run out on Texas Tech.
Box Score Hero: Texas running backs Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron combined for 232 rushing yards on 45 carries, keeping the potent Tech offense on the sidelines and making life easy for quarterback Case McCoy.
Rankings Ramifications: Neither team is in the Top 25, and both are unlikely to move into the polls this week. Texas could get back into the rankings with a win next week.
But Did They Cover? Texas was a six-point favorite and covered with ease.
