The Cyclones are looking for their first win of the year during their trip to Tulsa.
The Cyclones lost their opener in very disappointing fashion, falling at home to FCS opponent Northern Iowa 28-20. After a week off, they lost their rivalry game to Iowa, 27-21, returning the Cy-Hawk Trophy to Iowa City. They took an extra week to prepare for Tulsa, but will soon be thrown into nine straight weeks of Big 12 play.
Tulsa has not had the start they envisioned either, falling 34-7 at Bowling Green in a game that was predicted to be a close one. They rebounded the following week with a 30-27 victory over Colorado State, but were blown out by Oklahoma the next week. This will also be the Golden Hurricane’s last non-conference game and a home win will put them at .500 and in good position for C-USA play to start.
The numbers
Rankings and records: Neither team received any votes in the latest polls. Iowa State leads the all-time series 2-1. The two teams played twice in 2012 -- Iowa State beat Tulsa 38-23 in the season opener, and the Golden Hurricane responded with a 31-17 win in the Liberty Bowl.
Vegas: Tulsa is a 2.5-point home favorite, and the over/under is 54.5 points. OddsShark has more.
Weather: Night-time in Tulsa is expected to be at around 66 degrees with clear skies.
Three names to know
Quenton Bundrage. The Iowa State receiver is a legitimate playmaker who will look to create holes in the Tulsa defense and exploit them Thursday.
Trey Watts. On the other side, the Tulsa running back is averaging 5.5 yards per carry and is a big threat to catch the ball out of the backfield.
Shawn Jackson. Tulsa's senior linebacker, who will be tasked with stopping Iowa State's Sam Richardson, has an interception and 4.5 tackles for a loss on the year.
Two things at stake
If Iowa State loses this game, they are looking at an increasingly likely 0-12 finish.
With Louisiana Tech struggling, the C-USA West looks wide open. With a win, Tulsa puts themselves in good position moving into conference play.
