Virginia Tech cruised to an easy start vs. Georgia Tech Thursday night, scoring the game’s first 14 points and riding a hot Logan Thomas start to a 14-3 halftime lead. But the Yellow Jackets pulled closer in the third and now trail just 17-10.
Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech: Hokies lead late, but Yellow Jackets not far behind
Quarterback Vlad Lee engineered a 14-play, 82-yard drive that consumed more than eight minutes of the third quarter and culminated in a two-yard touchdown rush by running back David Sims.
One first-half concern for Virginia Tech held consistent in the third quarter; the absence of a running game. The Hokies have just 42 net rushing yards, a glaring negative considering Thomas himself has rushed for 45. Through the air, Thomas has cooled off, though, following a hot start. That said, he’s 17-of-21 for 191 yards and a touchdown.
After a seven-play, 26-yard drive in the fourth, Virginia Tech added three more points off a 39-yard Cody Journell field goal.
