De’Anthony Thomas injures ankle on opening kickoff vs. Cal

The Ducks will be without their biggest weapon for at least a bit.

Oregon Ducks running back De'Anthony Thomas limped off the field with an apparent ankle injury after taking the opening kickoff in the Cal-Oregon game tonight. After taking a big hit from California Golden Bears special teamer Bryce McGovern, the 5'9, 175-pound junior appeared to have some discomfort with his ankle and was examined on the sidelines. He limped off under his own power and walked around without his helmet for several drives.

No official word has been given as to his status or when he might return.

Byron Marshall replaced Thomas and has had clear trouble handling a very wet and rainy football, fumbling four times in the first quarter alone. Amazingly, the Ducks ended up losing none of the fumbles. Marshall also found his way into the end zone to open the scoring.

The step down from Thomas to Marshall may not be too big -- Oregon regularly rotates backs as it is. Oregon also has several other offensive threats, the biggest of which is quarterback Marcus Mariota, who is actually second on the team in rushing.

Marshall came into the game with 196 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
