3 things to know about Jimbo Fisher, FSU’s dynasty-saver

The Seminoles’ head coach has led the team to an undefeated 2013 season and back to national prominence.

1. He’s the hottest coaching name in college football, and this is his first head coaching job.

Jimbo Fisher certainly had experience before being hired to take over for Bobby Bowden in 2010, but none of it came as a head coach. A quarterback for the Salem College Tigers and Samford Bulldogs, he played for a year in the Arena Football League before starting his career as a coach.

After five years with Stanford, Fisher was a quarterbacks coach with Auburn, Cincinnati and LSU, getting the offensive coordinator job in Baton Rouge. He was hired away by Florida State in 2007, as the new offensive coordinator and “head coach in waiting.”

He was promoted to the Seminoles’ head coaching job in 2010, and has finished in the AP Top 25 in each of his four seasons with the school. His tenure began with two straight four-loss seasons, including a division title in 2010, but the Seminoles have won the conference each of the past two seasons, with a win in last year’s Orange Bowl spurring on their undefeated 2013 campaign.

He was a finalist for Coach of the Year. He's one of the country's best recruiters, also one of its best offensive playcallers (he also handles the team's primary offensive coordinator duties) and he's helped develop three straight first-round NFL Draft picks at quarterback (assuming Jameis Winston is picked highly when he leaves, which is a safe assumption).

2. It doesn’t seem like he’s going anywhere anytime soon.

Fisher’s predecessor, Bobby Bowden, was with the school from 1976 to 2009. While Fisher may not be in Tallahassee for nearly that long, it’s a school that is known for keeping their coaches around for quite some time.

He was rumored to be pursued by Texas (which his quarterback then joked about), but a new contract extension shows the school's faith in him.

Fisher entered Florida State with high expectations that he has since exceeded, and seems incredibly comfortable in Tallahassee.

Here's some video of Fisher after a practice leading up to the title game.

3. He’s too cool for Mickey Mouse.

That’s right. Jimbo says you should put on a real tie, Mickey.
