Florida State breaks Oklahoma’s NCAA FBS record for total points in a season

The previous record was held by the Sooners, set in 2008.

Florida State has furthered its claim as one of the greatest offenses ever to play college football, as the Seminoles have broken the all-time FBS record for scoring in a single season. The record was broken in Florida State’s 14th game of the season -- the BCS National Championship Game against Auburn.

Coming into the game, Florida State had scored 689 points (already surpassing 2005 Texas’s 13-game record of 652), and needed just 28 to pass the mark of 716, held by the 2008 Oklahoma team. The Noles reached 723 in the final seconds, forever marking their place in the record books.

The Seminoles are not the highest-scoring team in NCAA history -- the record books show Division II Pittsburgh State scored 837 points in 15 games in 2004 -- but they are among the highest. The FCS and Division III record books only list teams with the highest points per game, and 1984’s Mississippi Valley State (60.9) and 1993’s Saint John’s of Minnesota (61.5) both sport higher per-game averages the the Seminoles.

The all-time NCAA individual scoring leader is Dustin Hopkins, who was Florida State's kicker from 2009 through 2012, just barely missing out on this run to the title. In his four years with the Seminoles, he scored 459 points.
