Mike Shanahan wants to coach Michigan or Florida, per report

The 62-year-old Shanahan hasn’t coached in college football since 1983.

Hey, remember Mike Shanahan? Won a pair of Super Bowls with John Elway about 15 years ago, then kept coaching with some pretty mixed results? Well, ever since the Washington NFL gig ended ignominiously at the end of the 2013 season, ol’ Shanny’s had a little bit of time on his hands, and wouldn’t you know it, there just might be a job opening up in Ann Arbor or Gainesville kind of soon. Suffice it to say, Shanahan has noticed.

Here’s this from Wolverine247:

Jim Harbaugh has been the NFL name linked most to the Michigan job, but there's another name to throw in the mix.

Sources close to the situation have told Wolverine247 that former Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan would be interested in returning to college football for either the Wolverines or Florida Gators job if they were to open.

It wouldn’t be Shanahan’s first foray into college coaching -- he spent nine years as an assistant at various college destinations, including offensive coordinator gigs at Minnesota (1979) and Florida (1980-83). But he has never been a college head coach, nor has he had to spend any of the last 30 years recruiting.

There is, however, a bit of a precedent worth noting: Steve Spurrier. Spurrier also came back to college relatively late in the game, joining South Carolina at the age of 60* and succeeding beyond what virtually any Gamecock fan could have asked for back in 2005. Pete Carroll was also more of an NFL guy when USC hired him, but despite his geriatric gray hair, he was only 50 at the time.

And finally, it’s not like there’s a news report out that Michigan or Florida would be interested in Shanahan. Also, Brady Hoke and Will Muschamp are still coaching out the season, and maybe they’re not fired? Okay, they’re completely fired. But still, any action here is a long, long way off.

*If you want to be pedantic, he was hired at 59 and turned 60 a few months before USC’s first game of the 2005 season.
