Florida State announced that it has suspended starting quarterback Jameis Winston for the first half of the Clemson game after Winston yelled obscenities on campus on Tuesday.

Winston imitated a popular internet meme and shouted, “f--k her right in the p---y,” which was reported by many students. That followed Winston’s citation for shoplifting, a sexual assault accusation, and some relatively minor run-ins.
FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said the Seminoles were exploring suspending Winston, and the university released this statement with the news minutes later:
As the university’s most visible ambassadors, student-athletes at Florida State are expected to uphold at all times high standards of integrity and behavior that reflect well upon themselves, their families, coaches, teammates, the Department of Athletics and Florida State University. Student-athletes are expected to act in a way that reflects dignity and respect for others.
As a result of his comments yesterday, which were offensive and vulgar, Jameis Winston will undergo internal discipline and will be withheld from competition for the first half of the Clemson game.
“That was a selfish act, and that’s not how you do things around here,” Winston said in a press conference after the statement. He referred to the suspension as “adversity” to be “overcome,” adding, “I messed up” and “I have to tone it down.”

This could affect Florida State in its game against Clemson, which should be one of the Seminoles’ toughest games of the season. FSU was favored by three touchdowns, but this suspension could keep the Tigers in the game, since Winston won’t be available until halftime. Last season, FSU blew out Clemson in Death Valley, a stadium Winston referred to as “our house” afterward.
Sean Maguire will be FSU’s quarterback in the first half. He has a “strong grip” on the No. 2 job and was a three-star prospect coming out of high school. A sophomore, he has seen time as Winston’s backup. He attempted 21 passes last year, completing 13 of them, and is 3-for-5 so far this season.
Winston praised Maguire and said he would help have the backup ready to play, saying, “Sean is a great quarterback, and that’s why Coach Fisher recruited him ... Sean is hungry. He wants his opportunity. God has blessed him.”
