Texas football got a big hit on Wednesday when it was announced that starting quarterback David Ash will give up football.
Texas QB David Ash gives up football due to concussions
Ash had been held out of play while dealing with concussion symptoms again this season.

Charlie Strong announces that David Ash has decided to give up football.
— Longhorn Network (@LonghornNetwork) September 17, 2014 Ash was held out of the Longhorns’ game against BYU in Week 2 after suffering a concussion in the opener against North Texas. After the BYU game, Strong announced that Ash was “out indefinitely.” Ash has a history of concussions and there were calls for him to give up football in order to protect his health.
Given the concussion history of Ash when his symptoms lingered for months last season and the fact he hasn't been able to make it through a game without either suffering another concussion or at least having his symptoms return, the prognosis for the continuation of his football career does not seem positive.
In fact, there have been widespread calls for Ash to give up the game in order to best preserve his long-term health, a conversation that the Ash family might have to sit down and have again with doctors.
In a time when there is so much focus on player safety and so much more knowledge than there was in the past about what concussions can lead to, this was likely for the best. Tyrone Swoopes, who has played in Ash’s absence, will likely continue to be the starter.
