Clemson, the ACC champion, was the only undefeated team remaining at the end of the college football regular season. The Tigers were ranked first in the inaugural College Football Playoff poll and remained in the pole position throughout the season.
Sophomore Deshaun Watson finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting and won the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s best quarterback, and the Tigers have one of the nation’s best pass defenses. Opponents are passing for just 167 yards per game and converting less than 25 percent of third downs against the Clemson defense. As if that was not enough, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney -- the AP Coach of the Year -- has won his last three bowl games, including an Orange Bowl win in 2013.
Oklahoma overcame a loss to Texas in the Red River Shootout to defeat the Big 12’s three other top teams -- Baylor, TCU, and Oklahoma State -- to take the conference’s championship. Oklahoma’s new Air Raid offense has been prolific, averaging 543 yards and 46 points per game.
If Watson is the country's best quarterback, Sooner signal caller Baker Mayfield is a close second. The Texas Tech transfer has thrown for nearly 3,400 yards and 35 touchdowns, with 1,200 of those yards and 11 touchdowns going to wide receiver Sterling Shepard. Head coach Bob Stoops, who will be the nation's longest-tenured coach at kickoff, has not won an Orange Bowl since his program's improbable 2000 national championship run.
