Wake Forest’s ongoing football espionage caper has already enmeshed the programs at Louisville and Army. Now a fourth school has entered the fray: Virginia Tech.
Wake Forest’s leaks debacle now includes Virginia Tech game that went to OT at 0-0
Yeah, the game that ended at 6-3.
The Hokies released a statement Thursday afternoon, with athletic director Whit Babcock acknowledging a “former Wake Forest staff member” gave game-plan information to one of Virginia Tech’s “former assistant coaches” in 2014.
The Hokies played the Demon Deacons in 2014, and the game ended in a 6-3 Wake Forest victory. There were zero points scored in regulation of that game, which was roundly mocked and simultaneously enjoyed all around the college football internet. This image of then-Hokies coach Frank Beamer became synonymous with the game:
Beamer’s statement, denying any involvement or knowledge here:
Wake Forest accuses former player and assistant Tom Elrod of furnishing — or attempting to furnish — opposing teams with confidential game-plan information from 2014 until this year. Elrod had spent that time as a radio commentator for the Deacs, though he’s now banned from the team’s facilities and out of that job.
This scandal came to light in November, after a member of Wake’s travel party for a game at Louisville found game documents at the Cardinals’ stadium. The Deacs initiated an investigation and publicly implicated Elrod this week.
Louisville coach Bobby Petrino has denied any “knowledge of the situation,” but the Cardinals’ athletic director said this week offensive coordinator Lonnie Galloway got a game-plan-related call from Elrod before the Wake-Louisville game in November.
