Wake Forest’s game at Louisville on Nov. 12 was what set off Wakeyleaks, the pigskin espionage thriller that enthralled the college football world this winter.
This might be how Wake Forest’s disgraced radio announcer leaked info to Louisville
The football spy caper of the millennium now has new information.

A member of Wake’s travel party found Demon Deacons game plan documents at the Cardinals’ stadium. The Deacs investigated how they got there, and they settled on former assistant coach and then-radio commentator Tom Elrod as their mole. The debacle also touched Virginia Tech and Army.
Now, a hint at how it all might’ve started, thanks to a records request by CBS Sports. Here’s what CBS says is a text exchange the night before the game between Elrod and Lonnie Galloway, a former colleague of his who’s now a Louisville co-offensive coordinator:
Elrod at 8:37 p.m.: “On way now.”
Galloway at 8:48 p.m.: “OK. Sitting by fire pit.”
Elrod at 8:59 p.m.: “Outside?”
In connection with the leak, Louisville suspended Galloway for its bowl game. Bobby Petrino, Galloway’s boss and the Cards’ head coach, said he knew nothing.
More, from CBS’ Jon Solomon:
Phone records for Galloway showed he initiated a 25-minute call with Elrod on Nov. 9, three days before the game. The length of the call was by far the longest Galloway had with anyone that week. CBS Sports independently verified the phone number belonged to Elrod.
Galloway and Elrod both didn’t comment. The two previously worked together on Wake’s staff. There’s no proof here that Elrod and Galloway actually met on the eve of the game, or that Elrod passed him illicitly obtained documents at such a meeting.
A recap of where we’re at now:
- Wake Forest says Elrod is the mole.
- Louisville suspended Galloway.
- The two reportedly texted the night before the game that set this story off, in a way that suggested they were about to meet.
- The two reportedly had a long phone call a few days earlier.
Galloway is still on Louisville’s staff. It’s not clear if this report will lead to any further investigation of his and Louisville’s roles in the story, whatever they were.
