At halftime, Wake Forest was flat out crushing Temple, winning 31-10. The game isn’t even as close as that score indicates. The Owls scored on their first offensive play of the game, and only mustered a field goal after that. In explaining the offensive explosion against a good Temple defense, obviously coach Dave Clawson was going to be asked if this had anything to do with the end of Wakeyleaks.
Wake Forest coach sidesteps question about whether WakeyLeaks’ end is helping them crush Temple
Dave Clawson said they’re just plain executing.
ESPN’s Paul Carcaterra asked Clawson if the team’s success could be attributed to now being able to use the full playbook with no fear of espionage.
His answer was both diplomatic and humorous in the way he played it off.
“Again, we’re executing well and playing well. Nice try.” he said with a wry smile as he walked to the locker room.
You can see the gears turning in his head before he answered the question. Coach-speak isn’t a myth, these guys know how to speak the language and speak it well. But the smile makes you wonder, how much of an effect does an end to the caper have on this game? Maybe Clawson’s just playing coy with us, or maybe even he thinks there’s a link between putting the fiasco behind them and an impressive bowl performance in the game’s opening stanza.
