Kansas State marched into Houston on Thursday and beat Texas A&M, 33-28, in a Texas Bowl that felt sort of like a road game for the Wildcats. After the final play, legendary KSU coach Bill Snyder had a cooler dumped on him. It was an odd cooler dumping.
Bill Snyder’s explanation for having confetti and not Gatorade dumped on him is hilarious
“I think they realized that we could go back to the hotel and celebrate — or go back to the hotel and run around it all night.”
That’s a new move. Never in my life have I seen players dump a non-liquid object on a coach after a victory. Confetti’s just the right kind of festive, harmless alternative. Snyder seemed to like it more than the liquid option.
Someone asked Snyder about his players’ rationale after the game.
The mental image of a Gatorade-soaked, 77-year-old Snyder leading his players in sprints around the outside of a hotel into the wee hours of the morning is a fun one. It didn’t apparently happen, but I’ll bet Snyder was only about one-third joking here.
Kansas State has a lot to be happy about. The Wildcats finished one of the country’s quieter nine-win seasons, and they did it by beating a vastly more talented team in their home state. Confetti’s an appropriate prop for the occasion.
