Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State in Bedlam, wins the 2016 Big 12, and is probably Sugar Bowling

A Big Bedlam win propels Oklahoma to a sugary sweet postseason.

Oklahoma beat Oklahoma State, 38-20, to win the Big 12 title and beat their in-state rival in one fell swoop.

The Big 12 hasn’t had much of a Playoff chance thanks to its marquee teams picking each other off and a litter of two loss teams marking the top of the standings. But Bedlam will always have meaning and this year postseason stakes still exist as this is the de facto Big 12 championship game, despite not having any bearing on the playoff.

Oklahoma State will take the 90-mile bus ride down I-35 to face arch-rival Oklahoma in a game for all the marbles in the Big 12. For the fourth time in the last six years, the Big 12 title will run through the state of Oklahoma. Oklahoma has won three of those, with Oklahoma State’s lone Big 12 title coming in 2011.

Last season, the Sooners took an undermanned, worn-down Oklahoma State team to the woodshed on its home turf. This season, the tables appear to have leveled. Both teams are riding high heading into this game with Oklahoma having won their last eight games, and Oklahoma State having won their last seven games.

It is the tenth Big 12 title for OU coach Bob Stoops, and this eye-popping stat shows just how good Stoops has been as coach of the Sooners despite with detractors may say.

In what’s a deviation from the norm, the Bedlam game was downright compelling at least for a bit before it became abundantly clear that OU would pull away. Oklahoma’s Dede Westbrook added to his bonafides as a certified freak athlete by channeling his inner Reggie Bush with this back-juke.

But Westbrook sustained an injury during the second quarter and didn’t return.

Samaje Perine also suffered an apparent head injury before returning to the game as well. With their best offensive players out for various periods of the game, the Sooners still clicked on offense with more than 600 total yards and nearly 40 points ensuring that the Pokes will still only have two wins in the series dating back to 2003.
