Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin will be the top target for the University of South Florida’s head coaching job, multiple sources confirmed to SB Nation. The position was vacated by Willie Taggart, who’s leaving to be Oregon’s HC.
Lane Kiffin will be USF’s top head coaching target to replace Willie Taggart
Alabama’s offensive coordinator is drawing plenty of interest.

Kiffin met with the University of Houston regarding its head coaching opening on Sunday evening. He’s considered a “top” candidate for the Cougars, but sentiment is building for interim head coach Todd Orlando, especially if Orlando can keep current offensive coordinator Major Applewhite. Kiffin is attractive to Houston, but establishing a consistent transition from the Tom Herman era would sway decision makers.
Kiffin has personal connections with the Tampa area, including the decade-plus his father, Monte, spent as defensive coordinator of the Buccaneers.
New LSU head coach Ed Orgeron has also pursued former colleague Kiffin with the intent to hire him as LSU’s offensive coordinator.
Kiffin was previously a head coach with the Oakland Raiders, at Tennessee, and at USC, being fired from Oakland and USC.
His overhaul and modernization of Alabama’s offense have contributed to a third straight College Football Playoff berth for Nick Saban’s Tide. Kiffin has said he intends to coach Bama’s offense through the remainder of the season, as former defensive coordinator Kirby Smart did the year prior while transitioning to Georgia’s head coaching job.
