Notre Dame and USC have the most NFL Draft No. 1 picks, but Cal just moved up the list

Jared Goff moves California into the Multiple Picks Club.

College football teams like to tell you about how much NFL Draft success they’ve had. They like to tell you this because they hope you are a high schooler who is very good at playing football, because maybe you’ll like them more if you think they are good at the NFL Draft.

One extremely crude way to measure this is to look at which schools have the most No. 1 overall picks. The 2016 No. 1, Jared Goff, is not the first to come from Cal (Steve Bartkowski, 1975), so he moves the Golden Bears up into the group of schools with multiple all-time No. 1 picks.

Hey, here’s the list!

The two with five each (but only one in the last 20 years)

And hey, they’re archrivals. College football’s like that.

Year Name Position College Team
1944 Angelo Bertelli QB Notre Dame Boston Yanks
1946 Frank Dancewicz QB Notre Dame Boston Yanks
1950 Leon Hart E Notre Dame Detroit Lions
1957 Paul Hornung HB Notre Dame Green Bay Packers

1977 Ricky Bell RB USC Tampa Bay Buccaneers
1996 Keyshawn Johnson WR USC New York Jets
2003 Carson Palmer QB USC Cincinnati Bengals

Two more rivals and Stanford (!) have four each

The Cardinal have been the Pac-12’s steadiest power, but it’s easy to forget their overall football history is very off-and-on. Nobody’s close to Stanford at producing No. 1 QBs, though.

1965 Tucker Frederickson RB Auburn New York Giants
1986 Bo Jackson RB Auburn Tampa Bay Buccaneers
1988 Aundray Bruce LB Auburn Atlanta Falcons
2011 Cam Newton QB Auburn Carolina Panthers

1954 Bobby Garrett QB Stanford Cleveland Browns
1971 Jim Plunkett QB Stanford New England Patriots

Another pair of rivals, plus Ohio State, sits at three each

1994 Dan Wilkinson DT Ohio State Cincinnati Bengals
1997 Orlando Pace T Ohio State St. Louis Rams
1976 Lee Roy Selmon DE Oklahoma Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2010 Sam Bradford QB Oklahoma St. Louis Rams
1966 Tommy Nobis LB Texas Atlanta Falcons
1978 Earl Campbell RB Texas Houston Oilers
1982 Kenneth Sims DE Texas New England Patriots

Two each, the group Cal just joined

“Billy Cannon and JaMarcus Russell” is the beginning of one of football’s saddest sentences.

1998 Peyton Manning QB Tennessee Indianapolis Colts
1985 Bruce Smith DE Virginia Tech Buffalo Bills
