Western Michigan’s offensive desires are, uhh, unconventional to say the least.
Western Michigan uses handoff, 2 laterals and a pass to gain 6 yards
This was indeed weird.
The box score description here just doesn’t do this justice: “Zach Terrell pass complete to Corey Davis for 6 yds to the Wisc. 49” This was a lot of work for merely 6 yards. If nothing else, it’s a 3.0 yards-per-lateral output here, so points for creativity.
I also really have to shout out the second pitching WR here, No. 15 Carrington Thompson. He moves seamlessly from flipping the ball out to lowering his shoulder and executing a block. He’s the reason Terrell was even able to get enough time to throw the ball.
A top-down look does show at least what the thought process was here. You can see all the linemen drift to the left to set up a wall for Davis. But, Wisconsin’s defenders actually set a really decent edge here, especially the linebacker who ends up at the top of the shot at the midfield painted number “50.”
The Badgers stay sound and don’t over pursue as a unit, and the gadget play doesn’t work.
