So, you’ve decided to play some old school fantasy football? Yet you didn’t join a TD only league, curious. Well, we will give you a pass since you probably couldn’t find anyone to join that league. But you did manage to find a group of people that reject the woke PPR scam we have going on in our country right now. Good for you.

As we all know, a reception for zero yards shouldn’t be worth a point. It’s sacrilege I tell you! Unfortunately, we have one player left in the league that truly speaks for the standard league ethos and his name is Derrick “Big Dog” Henry. He has been the standard standard bearer for a while now, as he rarely catches the ball, but instead rushes for a million yards and touchdowns without fail, especially in the Ravens offense.
Difference between picking standard and PPR players
If you usually don’t play in non-ppr leagues, it’s good to just get an overview of how not getting points for receptions changes the final point totals from the previous season. Our man Henry, he ended just behind Saquon Barklley as RB2 in standard, while finishing as RB4 in PPR leagues. It’s not a huge difference, as Henry put up 18 total touchdowns to mitigate the lack of receptions. Jonathan Taylor was the only Top 12 fantasy running back with fewer receptions than Henry and he finished as RB12 in PPR and RB8 in standard. There are many examples of PPR/standard differences, but for the most part, you aren’t going to knock good receiving backs in standard too far, as they are still getting the ball in space, which is always helpful for yardage and touchdowns.
For tight ends and wide receivers, touchdowns and yardage are key, which means big play receivers can move up without a lot of targets and receptions. Players like Jameson Williams and George Kittle saw nice boosts in standard leagues last season. The trouble is, players that don’t see a lot of targets will of course have fewer opportunities to score touchdowns and pick up yardage. Even in standard, we need our players to get as many opportunities as possible. So, boost those big play receivers in your rankings, but just know that they will continue to be more volatile than the top target earners.
