The NFL season is within spitting distance, which means we need to prepare for our fake football drafts. Below our my standard wide receiver rankings. As usual, we want players who rack up yardage and touchdowns. It doesn’t matter how they do it, as receptions give your pretend team no points and no glory.

Something that does matter in standard and all fantasy scoring are injuries. And making sure you are up to date on injuries heading into your draft is paramount. Let’s go through some of the more fantasy relevant wide receiver injuries ahead of Week 1.

Injuries

Chris Godwin/Jalen McMillan, Buccaneers

Godwin continues to recover from multiple injuries suffered to his ankle in Week 7 of last season. The team doesn’t plan to put him on the PUP list, but not because they believe he’ll be able to play within the first four games, but because they want him to practice with the team to prepare to play in October at some point. His injury was catastrophic enough to worry about how effective he’ll be when he returns.

The Bucs also lost Jalen McMillan to a neck injury, which will keep him out around 8 weeks give or take. All of these injuries are bad for the Bucs, but great for rookie first-rounder Emeka Egbuka, who should get all the work he can handle while Godwin is out and still have fantasy value when he returns.

Jauan Jennings, 49ers

Jennings has a calf issue and also wants an updated contract. There is a chance Jennings’ calf issue would clear up with a new contract. So, I’m still drafting Jennings as if he will be healthy enough to play Week 1 and hoping they get things worked out financially before then.

Khalil Shakir, Bills

Shakir suffered a high ankle sprain in training camp and is just now returning to practice. We’ll see how long it takes for him to get ramped back up, but at this point I’d expect him to be ready for Week 1.

Josh Downs, Colts

Downs is ealing with a hamstring injury, but he reportedly could return to practice before Week 1. His status for Week 1 does appear to be up in the air at this moment though.
