The Cardinals are coming off an 8-9 campaign in 2024, missing the playoffs for a third straight year. The pressure is on for them to take a step forward this season and one of the guys that could play a role in making that happen is second-year running back Trey Benson. He enters the year with an ADP (average draft position) in the 49-50 range across multiple scoring formats according to FantasyPros, making him a late-round backup option for fantasy managers.
Below, we’ll go over Benson’s outlook in fantasy football for Week 1.
Fantasy Football analysis: Cardinals RB Trey Benson
Benson saw limited touches as a rookie last season, registering just 63 carries for 291 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Cards. He served as an occasional change-of-pace back as veteran James Conner once again handled a good bulk of the load as the team’s workhorse tailback.
Bulking up ahead of his second year in the league, the 2024 third-round pick out of Florida State is poised for even more carries this season and was a trendy handcuff option for several fantasy managers across the board. Conner just turned 30 and with him dealing with injuries almost every year of his career, we may see a lot of Benson this season.
Start or sit in Week 1 standard/PPR leagues?
Sit. Fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach when it comes to a handcuff like Benson. A matchup against a potentially dreadful Saints team right out the gate is tempting, but I’d like to see how the second-year tailback is deployed first before I rush into putting him into the starting lineup.
