There aren’t a whole lot of NFL teams that still feature just one running back which is making fantasy football much more difficult. We may soon be adding another team to the running back by committee crew.
Fantasy Football Week 4 News: Ryan Torain May Take Some Of Clinton Portis’ Carries
Redskins RB Clinton Portis was benched in the second half last week and backup Ryan Torain stepped in to rush for 46 yards on seven carries for a solid six and a half yards per carry.
Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that, with Torain’s increased carries, Portis may serve more as a third down back moving forward.
There’s no doubt splitting carries between these two would hurt Portis on your fantasy football team but it may be a good thing for the Redskins team, as SB Nation DC notes.
Potentially making Portis the third-down back isn’t a huge demotion, though. The Redskins rank last in the NFL in third-down yards per play, as Ryan O’Halloran notes, so the fact that they may count on him to deliver in an area they are weak in demonstrates they still value the nine-year veteran.
Looking at his history with running backs, Mike Shanahan wouldn’t have a problem throwing a no-name with little experience like Ryan Torain back there. Shanahan has been very successful with running backs throughout his coaching career and he could quickly make Torain a star, if that’s the route he chose to go.
But, at this point, the Redskins haven’t made a definitive decision on the future of their running backs and, for now, Portis is a major part of that. Picking up Ryan Torain off the fantasy football waiver wire and waiting it out would be a very smart move at this point.
