Fantasy Football Week 3: Final Look At Who To Sit And Start

Suggestions on who to start and who to sit for NFL fantasy football players. Selections are based on both projections and matchups.

With a few minutes to spare before the third week of the fantasy football season gets underway, here’s a final look at who you should start and sit.

Start

WR Miles Austin:

Austin leads the NFL in receiving yards (20 recs/288 yds), so why is he worth mentioning? Because he’s hauled in only TD thus far and one catch for 30+ yards. Expect that to change today.

Houston fields a defense that ranks last in passing yards in NFL, giving up an astronomical 411 YPG. Dallas also ranks No.1 in pass attempts, at 49.5 per game.

We are predicting a huge effort from Austin today. Saying Dallas won’t be motivated on offense is an understatement. Wade Phillips’ job is on the hot seat, and Dallas should be motivated to rack up points in this statement game, targeting Miles Austin often in the process.

Bucs Defense/Special Teams:

The Bucs? Yeah, the Bucs. If you don't have them on your roster and can make a trade to acquire them cheaply, do it! They've given fantasy owners a reason to smile, rewarding them with 21 points in two games. This week, they face QB Charlie Batch, and a Steelers' team which fields a weak receiving corps.

Start Bucs’ defense, while sitting back and watching a low-scoring battle with QB Charlie Batch throwing an INT (or two).

Sit

RB Jamaal Charles

It's clear Kansas City is trying to begin the season with veteran RB Thomas Jones as their workhorse, as he's been given 33 carries to Charles' 22. The 32-year-old Jones is a consistent RB but last season wore down as the season progressed. Jones will likely receive the brunt of the carries tomorrow, with Charles receiving more and more carries as the season rolls on.

The matchup isn’t favorable for KC either, as they face a San Francisco defensive front which is tough to run on and has given up only 63.5 YPG on the ground this year.

WR Steve Smith

Smith is the Panthers' go-to guy through the air, heading a weak receiving corps. However, Jimmy Clausen is starting at QB and he faces a stout, deceptive, 3-4 defense lead by DC Mike Zimmer. We can expect Panthers to employ a run-first game plan.

It will not help that he will be matched up against two solid corners in Leon Hall and Johnathan Joseph, and fantasy owners can expect a drop-off in production from the 25 points he put up in his first two games.
