Fantasy Football News Roundup, Week 3: The Rise Of Michael Vick

After Week 3 of the fantasy football season, an old familiar name has assumed a new spot - starting QB and fantasy stud. All hail Michael Vick.

Week 3 of the 2010 NFL season has brought plenty of fantasy football news to dissect.

The big stories are Michael Vick's continued fantasy football domination, Anquan Boldin's three-TD day and Philip Rivers' 455 yards in a loss.

Michael Vick is turning into a fantasy superstar

The biggest fantasy football news of the season to this point is Michael Vick replacing Kevin Kolb at quarterback for the Eagles. Fantasy football players love Vick because he adds extra points with his legs.

On Sunday against the Jaguars, Vick had another one of those wow-days throwing for 291 yards, three touchdowns and rushing for another. He was responsible for all four of the Eagles touchdowns.

If you have Vick on your team, you’re sitting in a great position. If you don’t have Vick on your team, there’s no way you’re trading for him now.

Appreciating Anquan Boldin

The Ravens receiver put up 142 yards on eight catches and added three scores on Sunday in a 24-17 victory over Cleveland.

The news of the day, however, is that Boldin was the fastest receiver to 600 catches in NFL history. Boldin isn’t considered elite by many people so that number is shocking.

The lesson to take from this: Boldin may be a risky fantasy play because of his injury history but when he’s healthy, he’s one of the best.

Adrian Peterson puts up half his points on one play

Adrian Peterson is showing folks why he was the right choice as the No. 2 pick in most fantasy drafts.

He ended the game with 160 yards rushing for two touchdowns. Half those points came on one play as Peterson set a Metrodome record with an 80-yard touchdown run.

With Brett Favre struggling, Peterson becomes even more valuable. The Vikings should and probably will give Peterson a heavier load moving forward as the season wears on Old Man Favre.

Chris Johnson continues quest for 2,500 yards

Before the season the Titans' Chris Johnson said he was aiming for 2,500 yards rushing -- his coming off of a 2,006 yard season in 2009.

So how’s he doing so far?

Well, he’s not on pace. Week 1 saw him go for 142 yards, Week 2 only notched 34 yards but in Week 3 he made a comeback of sorts rushing for 125 yards and a pair of scores.

Johnson's quest for 2,500 yards looks a little far-fetched at this point but with Vince Young struggling, a bigger emphasis on the running game moving forward may be all he needs.

No. 2 receivers take control in Week 3

On Sunday, we saw a handful of receivers who aren’t their teams primary targets have big games.

  • Colts WR Austin Collie: 12 catches, 171 yards, two touchdowns
  • Saints WR Lance Moore: Six catches, 149 yards, two touchdowns
  • Cowboys WR Roy Williams: Five catches, 117 yards, two touchdowns

What you should take from this is that a No. 2 or even a No. 3 receiver on a quality offense has the potential to put up big numbers. When someone like Peyton Manning is throwing for 40-plus touchdowns, Reggie Wayne can't catch 'em all.

Chargers' 1-2 start doesn't hinder Philip Rivers fantasy value

The Chargers have started 1-2 losing to 2009 basement dwellers the Chiefs and the Seahawks. Just because the Chargers are losing doesn't mean Philip Rivers isn't having a good fantasy season.

In Week 1, he put up 298 yards and two touchdowns. In Week 2, he added three touchdowns (and two picks) to 334 yards passing. Against the Seahawks in Week 3, Rivers had 455 passing yards moving his total to over 1,000 yards through the first three games.

The Chargers may not be winning but owners of Philip Rivers in fantasy football are. The good news is that this isn’t an anomaly: He threw for over 4,000 yards and 28 touchdowns last year.
