The San Francisco 49ers can breath a bit of a sigh of relief as they were informed on Tuesday that wide receiver Braylon Edwards would not be suspended for his DWI incident last September with the New York Jets. Edwards pled guilty to driving while intoxicated in July and had been waiting for word from the league on whether he would face a one or two game suspension.
Braylon Edwards Will Not Face Suspension, Looks Like 49ers Number One Receiver
While many people scoff at the 49ers offensive fantasy football options outside of Frank Gore and Vernon Davis, Braylon Edwards could emerge as a solid fantasy start in San Francisco. While Michael Crabtree sat out all of training camp with a fractured foot, Edwards has emerged as a potentially frequent target of Alex Smith. Edwards and Smith have spent extra time after practice working on timing and chemistry. While Vernon Davis and Frank Gore will get their numbers, the 49ers know they need consistent work from the wide receivers if they are going to implement a consistent offense.
Edwards is a big, physical wide receiver and could be a frequent red zone target on fade routes. This Sunday he faces a Seattle Seahawks defense that has plenty of question marks. While Edwards is not a number one receiver in fantasy football by any stretch of the imagination, he is at least a solid flex option in week one, and I think by season's end he could be a decent number two receiver on your fantasy squad. If he's on the waiver wire I recommend grabbing him sooner rather than later.
