Fantasy football waiver wire advice, Week 10: Who to target with Aaron Rodgers, RG3 on bye

Aaron Rodgers and Robert Griffin III will be forced to sit Week 10 due to bye weeks, leaving fantasy owners scrambling to the waiver wires for a starting quarterback. We break down the best options still available in your league.

Jeff Gross

Two of the biggest names in fantasy football, Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers and Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins, are on byes this week, along with Brandon Weeden of the Cleveland Browns and John Skelton of the Arizona Cardinals.

Unprepared fantasy owners will be making a mad dash for the waiver wires this week. Luckily, plenty of intriguing quarterback options are likely available in your league for Week 10.

Once again, the following five QBs, ranked from worst to first, are owned in 60 percent or fewer of Yahoo! fantasy football leagues this week:

5) Alex Smith, 49ers -- Own percent: 45% Through 8 games: 145-for-209 passing, 1,659 yards, 12 TDs, 5 INTs

Smith is coming off a near-perfect , 18-for-19, three-touchdown passing performance in Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals. It's still too soon to call him a reliable starter, however, considering he had just one touchdown pass to four interceptions over his previous two games. He also faces a good St. Louis Rams defense that the San Francisco 49ers will look to run on if they can.

4) Russell Wilson, Seahawks -- Own percent: 19% Through 9 games: 145-for-234 passing, 1,639 yards, 13 TDs, 8 INTs

Wilson threw all three of his touchdown passes in the first half of last week's win over the Minnesota Vikings, building a big lead for the Seattle Seahawks so Marshawn Lynch could dominate in the second half. The point still stands that head coach Pete Carroll has allowed Wilson to sling the ball around early in two straight games, loosening the rookie's leash. Wilson has delivered, and has the potential to be a strong sleeper over the second half of the season. A matchup against a New York Jets defense that has given up just nine passing touchdowns on the year doesn't bode well, but Wilson is still worth targeting for his long-term potential.

3) Ryan Tannehill, Dolphins -- Own percent: 8% Through 8 games: 142-for-241 passing, 1,762 yards, 5 TDs, 6 INTs

Tannehill bounced back nicely from a knee/thigh injury and went 22-for-28 passing for 290 yards and a touchdown last week against the Indianapolis Colts. The Miami Dolphins' rookie has otherwise put up underwhelming numbers this season, but has been steady and has a prime matchup this week. The Tennessee Titans have given up a league-high 20 passing touchdowns this season with just six interceptions, while allowing 273 yards per game through the air. Alex Smith is perhaps a safer starting option, but Tannehill has more upside.

2) Carson Palmer, Raiders -- Own percent: 50% Through 8 games: 201-for-330 passing, 2,355 yards, 13 TDs, 8 INTs

Palmer had a monster fantasy performance last week, going 39 for 61 for 414 yards and four touchdowns to offset three interceptions. Granted, he was playing against a bad Tampa Bay Buccaneers secondary, but the Oakland Raiders may need to pass a lot again to play catch-up if the Baltimore Ravens and Ray Rice run wild like Doug Martin did. Palmer has otherwise been relatively quiet this season, but at a minimum he should put up serviceable numbers, keeping you safe from a total dud in your lineup.

1) Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bills -- Own percent: 48% Through 8 games: 158-for-256 passing, 1,674 yards, 15 TDs, 9 INTs

Fitzpatrick was held without a touchdown pass in three games against the 49ers, Cardinals and Texans. He is averaging three touchdown passes in each of his five other games played, however, all against mediocre-to-bad secondaries. The Buffalo Bills take on a New England Patriots defense that has given up 17 passing touchdowns this season, four of which came from Fitzpatrick in Week 4. The former Harvard product has the highest ceiling of any QB on waivers this week, if you're willing to take on the risk of his potentially low floor.
