With Ryan Mathews sidelined for several weeks, Michael Gelken of U-T San Diego says the Chargers will use a committee of three at running back. Ronnie Brown, Curtis Brinkley and Le'Ron McClain will split carries going forward.

Analysis: None of these alternate options should really excited fantasy owners, and it remains to be seen which player will see the most action with Mathews out. Brown is believed to be the frontrunner for the most touches among the group, as he provides a veteran who San Diego brought in this offseason to backup Mathews.

Brinkley is the most familiar with the Chargers offense, but his 3.4 yards per carry last season were not very impressive. McClain will see a shift in workload after he was originally slated to be the starting fullback going into the preseason. He can be effective in short-yardage situations, and might play the Mike Tolbert role that we saw last season around the goal line. Keep an eye on how this group plays out in the remaining preseason games.
