James Jones remains out of practice; don’t count on him for fantasy

The Packers wide receiver has missed two straight games, and it remains to be seen if he can make it back for Monday’s game. We break down the fantasy implications.

Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones sat out practice Thursday, according to Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel beat reporter Tom Silverstein, increasing the chances Jones misses his third straight game Monday when the Packers take on the Chicago Bears.

Jones has missed the Packers' last two games with his knee injury. In his absence (and the injury absences of wide receiver Randall Cobb and tight end Jermichael Finley), the team's No. 1 receiver, Jordy Nelson, and second-year receiver Jarrett Boykin have been the team's top receiving options. Nelson has three touchdowns and 165 yards in the two games Jones has missed; Boykin has only one score, but 192 yards, in the same time.

Fantasy impact: It remains to be seen whether Jones will be able to play Monday; the best bet is that, if he plays, he sees limited snaps against the Bears. It seems really unlikely that Jones will be at full strength Monday, or see full production.

Considering the fact that the Packers' Week 9 game is on Monday night, and the only other fantasy-relevant receivers in that game are Nelson, Boykin, Brandon Marshall, and Alshon Jeffery, fantasy owners who wait until Monday to see if Jones plays won't have much in the way of backup options. Unless the situation is desperate, it would be best to start someone in place of Jones and give him another week to heal.

Boykin, meanwhile, should be a fine starting option, regardless of whether Jones plays.
