Fantasy football Week 6 projections: Panthers-Bengals featuring Cam Newton, Greg Olsen and Mohamed Sanu

We break down the Week 6 matchup between the Carolina Panthers and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

The Week 6 matchup between the Carolina Panthers and the Cincinnati Bengals features two teams who gave up a lot of points last week. We've got the fantasy projections for you courtesy of numberFire.

Carolina Panthers

Quarterback Cam Newton just doesn't look like the same player since sitting out the team's opening game with a rib injury. He's not scrambling out of the pocket the way he usually does, which by extension makes the team's entire offense a bit less threatening. While he's been teetering on the brink of elite fantasy status since he came into the league, Newton is a low-end starting quarterback these days. He faces a tough matchup against the Bengals on the road this week against a defense looking to put together a bounce-back performance.

If he can beat the Bengals defense, it'll have to happen through tight end Greg Olsen, who's currently on pace for a career-high number of targets. Olsen had six catches for 72 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Chicago Bears last week, including the game-winning score. He'll be in for a good day against Cincinnati, a team that gives up the second-most fantasy points to tight ends -- that is, of course, if an ankle injury doesn't slow him down.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals looked overmatched against the New England Patriots last week, a surprising outcome since the Bengals have looked like one of the best teams in the NFL this season. The team will likely be without star wideout A.J. Green, who was carted off of the field at practice on Wednesday after re-aggravating a toe injury. That means Mohamed Sanu will be the team's No. 1 receiving option against the Panthers. Sanu had five catches for 70 yards and a touchdown against the Patriots last week and figures to reach double-digits in targets against the Panthers this week.

Green's imminent absence likely means quarterback Andy Dalton leans on the running game a lot, which should mean a lot of carries and receptions for Giovani Bernard. Bernard only managed 72 yards on 15 touches in Week 5, but the Chicago Bears' Matt Forte went off for 166 total yards against Carolina last week. Given Green is going to be out and the Panthers give up the fifth-most fantasy points to running backs this season, Bernard could be in for a big day in Week 6.
