Week 5 fantasy football projections: Chiefs-49ers featuring Jamaal Charles, Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick
We break down the Week 5 matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers.

Kansas City Chiefs
Jamaal Charles worked his way back into the lineup against the New England Patriots in Week 4, playing for the first time since suffering an ankle injury in Week 2. He promptly added a dynamic to the Chiefs' offense that had been missing, scoring a trio of touchdowns to go with 108 total yards against the Pats. He's without a doubt the engine the drives the team on the offensive side of the football and he'll have to be in top form against a really good 49ers run defense this week.
If Charles does well, it'll give quarterback Alex Smith a better shot at playing game manager and working his way into the fantasy conversation in standard leagues. Smith has been excellent this year, throwing six touchdowns and no interceptions over the last three games. While it will be tough to remain turnover-free against the 49ers, Smith will have plenty of motivation going into the game, as he aims to beat the team that replaced him with then backup and current 49ers starter Colin Kaepernick.
San Francisco 49ers
Speaking of Colin Kaepernick, his mediocre performance in a comeback victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last week was concealed in reality by the fact the team won, and in the fantasy world by the fact Kaepernick was able to pick up 58 rushing yards on seven attempts. He'll need to be better against the Chiefs on Sunday as he missed a few open receivers last week and Kansas City possesses a strong pass rush.
When Kaepernick does have trouble moving the ball through the air, he'll have the always-trustworthy Frank Gore to help him carry the load along the ground. After Gore had gotten off to a slow start, failing to surpass 66 yards on the ground in the team's first three games, he ran all over the Eagles for 119 yards on 24 carries. He may be getting older, but for now Gore's legs look as strong as ever and he's still producing. The 49ers can only hope he can find a way to get past the Chiefs' solid run defense. If he does, it could mean a second straight win for San Francisco and a good day for his fantasy owners.
