Fantasy football projections, Week 5: Rams-Packers featuring Todd Gurley, Aaron Rodgers and Randall Cobb
We break down the Week 5 matchup between the St. Louis Rams and the Green Bay Packers.
St. Louis Rams
The Rams walked into Arizona last week and shocked the NFL by beating the previously undefeated Cardinals. The victory was thanks in large part to rookie running back Todd Gurley, who just two weeks into his pro career had a breakout game against a tough defense. He ran for 146 yards on 19 carries. He would’ve scored his first career rushing touchdown late in the game, but chose to go down in bounds in order to keep the clock running and help the Rams seal the victory. If Gurley was a free agent in fantasy leagues because he started the season on the sidelines with an injury, he’s sure to be scooped off the waiver wire now.
So is wide receiver Tavon Austin, at least in deeper leagues. He’s shown versatility and incredible quickness during his short time in the NFL. It just simply hasn’t translated into making him the superstar that many pegged him to become. That said, this year in particular, the Rams don’t have much going on in terms of talented wide receivers. The club recently traded Chris Givens to the Baltimore Ravens and Brian Quick has barely seen the field this year, spending most of the time as a healthy scratch. Austin is probably the only pass catcher the team has who would give the Rams any hope of having a passing attack right now.
Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers didn’t put up a ton of points last week, but they didn’t have to. From a fantasy perspective, it stunted the team’s usual ability to put up high scores for owners. After throwing 10 touchdowns in the first three weeks of the season, quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw just one against the paltry San Francisco 49ers. He also finished with just 224 yards passing. He’ll face a tough Rams defense, but he’s also unquestionably the best quarterback in the game. The touchdown numbers should bounce back again on home turf, where Rodgers also hasn’t thrown an interception since Week 13 ... of the 2012 season.
Hopefully that means wide receiver Randall Cobb finds the end zone. Like Rodgers, he too was held in check by the 49ers. His five catches for 44 yards produced Cobb’s second-lowest total of the season. He also didn’t find the end zone. It will be tough to do so against the Rams, but Cobb is the team’s No. 1 receiver, and we’d expect at least one touchdown dance on Sunday.
