Fantasy football advice, Week 11: Who to start/sit for Chiefs vs. Chargers
Out of nowhere, the Chiefs find themselves contenders.
After starting the season 1-5, the Kansas City Chiefs have won three in a row to get to 4-5, and suddenly find themselves only a hot streak away from a real shot at AFC playoff contention. The San Diego Chargers, meanwhile — the Chiefs' Week 11 opponents — started 2-2 before losing five in a row, and at this point, they're likely looking ahead to 2016.
Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce is on the weekly injury report with a groin issue, though he always appears to be on the report and he always ends up playing. San Diego, meanwhile, will be without wide receiver Malcom Floyd. Both the team's tight ends are also on the report; Antonio Gates should be good to go for the game, while Ladarius Green is much more of a question mark.
Sunday’s game, in San Diego, is the only 4:05 p.m. ET scheduled start of Week 11. Let’s take a look at the fantasy names to consider:
CHIEFS
Start ‘em: You don't want to say a team isn't missing a guy like Jamaal Charles, but with Charcandrick West putting up 52 fantasy points the last three weeks, he's not far off. ... If you have Travis Kelce, you're still using him, and he has reasonable upside, but he hasn't been the top-three or top-four tight end we thought he'd be. ... Cairo Santos has been really strong of late, and has two 20-plus fantasy points this year. All the rest of the league's kickers combined have one. ... The Chiefs' defense has been peaking of late, and San Diego is just running out of weapons.
Start ‘em?: Since 20 and 14 fantasy points in back-to-back Weeks 3 and 4, Jeremy Maclin has 22 fantasy points in four games. He hasn't been the target monster he could've been in Kansas City.
Sit ‘em: A few times a season, Alex Smith will have a big game, but otherwise, he's only good for a large handful of fantasy points.
CHARGERS
Start ‘em: Before Philip Rivers' 15 fantasy points in his last game, he had 20-plus in five straight games. He's a must-start. ... Danny Woodhead has been a strong RB2 all season. You're using him, even moreso if it's a PPR league. ... One way or another, the San Diego offense has been doing enough to keep Josh Lambo in fantasy points.
Start ‘em?: With Keenan Allen and Malcom Floyd out, Stevie Johnson and Dontrelle Inman will be San Diego's top two wide receivers. Both have some upside, though neither is anything like a sure thing. ... If you have Antonio Gates, you're using him. That said, between his multiple injuries and the fact that Kansas City is one of the league's best teams against tight ends, if you have another option, you probably want to look long and hard at that option.
Sit ‘em: It's been a bad rookie season for Melvin Gordon, who has 42 fantasy points all season and hasn't reached 10 in a game yet. ... Considering his injuries, even if Ladarius Green plays, you can't use him. ... Stay far away from the Chargers' defense.
SUMMARY
Start in every league: Charcandrick West, Travis Kelce, Cairo Santos, Kansas City defense, Philip Rivers, Danny Woodhead, Josh Lambo
Start if you're desperate: Jeremy Maclin, Stevie Johnson, Dontrelle Inman, Antonio Gates
Bench: Alex Smith, Melvin Gordon, Ladaris Green, San Diego defense
