Fantasy football advice, Week 12: Who to start/sit for Dolphins vs. Jets
It’s the last stand for two struggling AFC East teams.
The Miami Dolphins came into the season being discussed as possible AFC East contenders, only for early struggles to ruin those hopes. The New York Jets, meanwhile, were getting similar talk after a 4-1 start to the season, but have lost four of five since to fall to 5-5. The two teams play each other Sunday, and the loser can likely be written off in any playoff discussion.
Miami running back Jay Ajayi and wide receiver Jarvis Landry are both on the injury report, though both are expected to play Sunday, with Landry at least something of a question mark. For the Jets, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and wide receivers Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall are all on the injury report, with all three expected to play. The team's biggest injury as it relates to fantasy is actually cornerback Darrelle Revis, who will miss the game with a concussion.
Sunday’s game between the two teams is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Let’s take a look at the fantasy names to consider:
DOLPHINS
Start ‘em: Since the team's bye, Lamar Miller has 17.5 fantasy points a game, though his production has fallen in three straight. Still, he's a must-start. ... Without Darrelle Revis to contend with, Jarvis Landry could feast on the New York defense. He's a must-start, even moreso in PPR leagues.
Start ‘em?: Week 11 wasn't great for Rishard Matthews, but overall he's been a huge surprise for this team most of the season.
Sit ‘em: Remember that big game Ryan Tannehill had against Houston, with 27 fantasy points? Since then, in four games, he's averaged 12 fantasy points a game and has four touchdowns against three interceptions. Just drop him. ... Jay Ajayi has high down-the-road potential, but for now all he is is a Miller touch-stealer. ... It was nice to see eight fantasy points out of Jordan Cameron in Week 11, but he had five total in the four games before that. There's no steady week-to-week production there. ... Andrew Franks has more games of two or fewer fantasy points (four) than he does of nine or more (three). ... The Dolphins' defense has averaged 1.3 fantasy points over its last four and, outside of a hot two-game stretch after the team's bye, hasn't done anything this year.
JETS
Start ‘em: You're still running Chris Ivory out there, though he's faded of late, and lost touches last week. If the trend continues, he might slip out of must-start territory. ... Brandon Marshall has been as consistent as any wide receiver in the game this season, with six or more points in every game and 10-plus eight times. ... Eric Decker put up fewer than nine points for the first time all season in Week 10, when he put up eight.
Start ‘em?: There's an argument for Bilal Powell as a digging-deep flex option, considering his leap in snaps since his return from injury last week. He probably isn't there yet, but his stock is rising. ... The Jets' defense was strong early in the year, but has averaged 2.8 points over its last five and now is without Darrelle Revis Sunday.
Sit ‘em: I tend to be down on Jameis Winston because he has (before last week) lacked much upside, and you need a quarterback who at least has the chance of single-handedly winning you the game a week. Well, the same applies to Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has at least 13 fantasy points every week except for the one where he got hurt, but has only gone past 20 fantasy points once all year. ... Kellen Davis is now the tight end to consider for the Jets, but he's just barely that. ... Randy Bullock hasn't matched the production Nick Folk had offered for New York.
SUMMARY
Start in every league: Lamar Miller, Jarvis Landry, Chris Ivory, Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker
Start if you’re desperate: Rishard Matthews, Bilal Powell, New York defense
Bench: Ryan Tannehill, Jay Ajayi, Jordan Cameron, Andrew Franks, Miami defense, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Randy Bullock
