Fantasy football advice, Week 13: Who to start/sit for Falcons vs. Buccaneers
Can Atlanta right the ship in time for a playoff run?
Things have certainly turned on their heads in the middle of the NFC South. The Atlanta Falcons were once 5-0, but are now 6-5 and clinging to the fringes of the playoff race, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were 1-3, 2-4 and 3-5, but after winning two of their last three are now 5-6 and hoping to make a late-season playoff run. The two teams play one another Sunday, with the loser seeing its playoff chances dim.
The Falcons put wide receiver Leonard Hankerson on injured reserve this week, and will be without kicker Matt Bryant for another week as well. The Falcons do expect to get running back Devonta Freeman back after he missed a game with a concussion, however. On the Tampa Bay side, wide receiver Vincent Jackson is expected to play despite a knee injury. Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins is tentatively expected to finally return from his shoulder injury as well, though he's been a late scratch so many times that you can't use him unless you're sure.
Sunday’s game, in Tampa Bay, is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Let’s take a look at the fantasy names to consider:
FALCONS
Start ‘em: After missing a game with injury, Devonta Freeman should return, and should be a must-start once again. ... Julio Jones is still a great must-start even off of a bad week.
Start ‘em?: With Leonard Hankerson on IR, Jacob Tamme stands to see a boost in usage. He's a strong TE2. ... The Falcons' defense has reasonable upside against a middling Tampa Bay offense.
Sit ‘em: Things have gone so poorly for Matt Ryan of late that he's not even a questionable start. Just bench him and use him once he's proven himself again. ... With Freeman back, Tevin Coleman's fantasy value evaporates. ... Roddy White hasn't been the Roddy White of old all season long. ... Shayne Graham replaces Matt Bryant for another week, but his upside is very limited.
BUCCANEERS
Start ‘em: In four of his last five games, Doug Martin has 10 or fewer fantasy points. He had 23 in the other game of that group, and still has elite upside, but he's far from a sure thing. ... If you have Mike Evans, you're using him, but he does have a tough matchup against Atlanta's defense.
Start ‘em?: In two games since returning from injury, Vincent Jackson has averaged nine fantasy points a game. He has decent upside in a flex role. ... Connor Barth's kicking numbers have (predictably) tailed off of late, but he still has at least five fantasy points in every game he's played this season. ... The Buccaneers' defense has had 11-plus points in two of its last three games, though the Atlanta offense is still a tough matchup.
Sit ‘em: Right after a huge Week 11, Jameis Winston slipped right back to middling performance in Week 12. He's a fine desperation play, but there's probably more upside elsewhere. ... At this point, I'm not using Austin Seferian-Jenkins in fantasy unless I have absolutely seen him play a game already. Sit him.
