Fantasy football advice, Week 13: Who to start/sit for Panthers vs. Saints
Carolina looks to remain the league’s last unbeaten team.
The Carolina Panthers are the last undefeated team left in the NFL. Sunday, they put that undefeated record on the line on the road against the 4-7 New Orleans Saints, who can't afford even one more loss if they want any chance at a possible playoff berth.
The Panthers' only fantasy-relevant player on the injury report is wide receiver Philly Brown, and he's expected to be fine despite a shoulder injury. On the New Orleans side, wide receiver Willie Snead is not expected to play with a calf injury, while running back Mark Ingram should play despite being listed on the injury report with a shoulder issue.
The Saints host the Panthers Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET. Let’s take a look at the fantasy names to consider:
PANTHERS
Start ‘em: There's no reason at this point not to use Cam Newton in every game, never mind the delightful matchup that only boosts him even more. ... Some of the love for Jonathan Stewart of late is out of control; he's a high-end RB2/low-end RB1, not a top-of-the-line guy as some have credited him. Still you're starting him. ... Greg Olsen has been a strong fantasy player most of the season. He's the week's top tight end. ... Graham Gano has averaged 14.2 fantasy points a game in his last five, an insane total for a kicker. ... The Panthers' defense has been crazy strong of late.
Start ‘em?: If Newton has as good a game as many expect out of him, the Carolina wide receivers will need to be heavily involved. Ted Ginn Jr. first, and Devin Funchess second, are the best candidates for big games of that group.
Sit ‘em: Even against the Saints, it's hard to imagine Philly Brown or Jerricho Cotchery having much fantasy relevance Sunday.
SAINTS
Start ‘em: Whenever evaluating Drew Brees, always remember how different a quarterback he is at home versus on the road. He's a fine home quarterback, even against a tough defense. ... Even in a bad matchup, Mark Ingram's usage is more than enough to keep him in lineups every week. ... Brandin Cooks will likely draw Josh Norman in coverage, which is intimidating, but Cooks isn't the typical receiver Norman faces; he gets a lot more underneath looks, and that's not Norman's strength. I'm still using Cooks. ... Benjamin Watson is probably the biggest beneficiary of Willie Snead's absence.
Sit ‘em: With Snead out, both Marques Colston and Brandon Coleman should see a bump in targets, but with both of them battling for looks, neither is much of a fantasy option. ... Kai Forbath and the Saints' defense both need to ride it out on the waiver wire.
