Carolina Panthers quarterback Derek Anderson has signed a two-year extension with the team worth $5 million. He started two games for the Panthers last season while Cam Newton dealt with injuries and won both of those contests.
Derek Anderson signs extension, fantasy value as backup unchanged
Panthers quarterback Derek Anderson will be with the team for two more years. We break down the fantasy implications.

Fantasy Impact: The Panthers signed Newton to a monster contract extension in the offseason. His deal is for five years and carries a $103 million price tag. It’s safe to say that at 32 years old, Anderson is cool with cashing a paycheck as a backup for the rest of his career. The deal gives the team security, which is important considering Newton isn’t afraid to run the ball himself or take a hit.
That said, while the team isn’t planning on anything happening to Newton in the long term, a steady backup is always a necessity in the NFL. Fantasy owners won’t exactly jump to draft Anderson or add him off of the waiver wire, but if Newton does miss time, the backup is a viable option for a spot start here and there in deeper leagues.
