Week 17 of the fantasy football season is here, and we’re back with another crop of start/sit options. A lot of players will be held out or see diminished roles, giving others rare opportunities. With that in mind, we’ll pick tight ends who should exceed expectations in Week 17, along with three you should probably sit.
Fantasy football start/sit advice, Week 17: Tight ends
We break down the top starting options at tight end this week, along with some players who should be avoided.

Start
Is this the swan song for Gates with the Chargers? If it is, he’s going down a hero after lighting up the Jets for a 6-81-1 line last week. He should be the main red-zone focus this week, especially with Melvin Gordon playing hurt. It would be a tremendous story if Gates vaulted the Chargers back into the playoffs, and we could all use some great stories this time of year.
If you stuck with Ebron all season, congratulations. Your patience is paying off in a huge way right now. Ebron is arguably the hottest tight end in football right now after his 5-83-1 line last week, his second straight game with a touchdown. His good times should keep right on rolling this week against the decimated Packers.
Doyle has 12 catches on 18 targets the past two weeks and had eight catches against Houston in Week 9. In a game that’s not exactly the ’75 Steelers vs. the ’86 Bears, Doyle should be open for another high volume day.
Sit
Evan Engram, New York Giants vs. Washington
The Giants aren’t playing him, and neither should you.
Andy Reid is probably not playing him, and neither should you.
This one is a little tougher. The Eagles starters are expected to play some, but it could be as little as a half, or even a quarter. Think of it like a preseason week, and if you have better, four-quarter options, look in that direction.
