Washington’s running game had a lot of setbacks this season. The team lost running backs Chris Thompson and Rob Kelley to injuries during the season. This opened the door for rookie rusher Samaje Perine to emerge as Washington’s workhorse. Perine was the only back that played all 16 games in Washington this season. He finished his rookie year with 175 carries for 603 yards and a touchdown and 22 catches for 182 and a receiving touchdown.
Health is top priority for Samaje Perine headed into 2018
Washington’s rookie rusher could work his way into the starting role next season if he can stay healthy.

Perine played through several injuries this season as well. He showed up on Washington’s injury report with hand, groin, and shoulder problems throughout the year. Perine’s rookie campaign ended in the first quarter of the final game of the season with an ankle injury.
Looking ahead to 2018
Perine needs to focus on his health this offseason. His ankle injury looked pretty serious compared to the small dings he took throughout the season. Washington is happy with how Perine performed as a starter his rookie year. He has a good chance to compete for the starting role next season if he is healthy. Perine will likely share the workload with Thompson in Washington backfield next season.
Fantasy Slant
Perine was a frustrating fantasy player last season partly because Washington’s running game was a mess. He flashed his talent in Weeks 10 and 11, rushing for 100 yards in back-to-back games. The 114th overall pick should settle down and be more consistent in 2018. Perine will be a late-round sleeper in most fantasy leagues.
