The San Francisco 49ers found a gem when they signed rookie Matt Breida from Georgia Southern as an undrafted free agent last summer.
Can Matt Breida handle a starting fantasy role in 2018?
Brieda showed promise in the backfield this season. However, the 49ers may still have some reservations about making their rookie free agent the workhorse.

Breida became an integral part of the offense early. Initially, the 49ers expected to have fourth-round pick Joe Williams backup Carlos Hyde in the backfield. Williams never played a regular-season game as he was placed on IR in the preseason with an ankle injury. In Williams absence, Breida did an excellent job supporting Hyde in the running game. He finished his rookie year with 105 carries for 465 yards and two touchdowns, and caught 21 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown.
Looking ahead to 2018
The 49ers’ running corps could look very different next season. Hyde will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Things could work out between the 49ers and Hyde this offseason. There is also an equal chance he will not be in San Francisco next year. That will leave a premier running back opening in Kyle Shanahan’s run-heavy offense. Breida will likely compete with Williams for the starting role if Hyde leaves the team. Brieda has the upper hand in experience after a strong rookie season. He is a very small back though, weighing just 190 pounds. There will be some questions about Breida’s durability as the workhorse for 16 games in 2018.
Fantasy Slant
Breida showed he can be fantasy relevant this season. He has a strong outlook heading into 2018 regardless of which role he plays in the 49ers’ backfield. Many owners will have their eye on what is happening in San Francisco this summer. Breida could come off draft boards as early as the fourth or fifth round if he gets the starting job. Dynasty fantasy players should consider making a move for Breida now while his value is on the rise.
