After one round of play at the Frys.com Open, Briny Baird, Brendan Steele, Garrett Steele, and Matt Bettencourt lead the field at 4-under par. This tournament would be barely a blip on the radar screen if it weren’t for the return of noted golf enthusiast Tiger Woods, and he’s, well, pretty much doing what he’s been doing for years now — not much of anything. Woods is +2 and six strokes off the lead.
Frys.com Open Leaderboard: Tiger Woods Six Off Lead
Woods hasn’t played since his disaster turn at the PGA Championship, and, as has been his buggaboo, he fell victim to an implosion hole. After a birdie to open his round, he bogeyed the next two holes, but was able to steady himself for eight straight pars before a double-bogey on 12 that pretty much sealed a bad round for him. He saved it a little with a birdie on 13, but finishing 2-under is, the new normal for the former world No. 1.
Some notable golfers having some success in this tournament are Ernie Els (-2), and ... well, really no one. This is tournament incredibly bereft of talent, which makes it even more depressing/satisfying that Tiger is struggling this much.
