With light rain falling, the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional Golf Club in Maryland is off to a slow start. But Ryan Palmer’s hot, and looking to make up for past Open failure.
2011 U.S. Open Leaderboard Update: Ryan Palmer Paces Field At Congressional
Palmer is 3-under through 11 holes, and leads the massive U.S. Open field after having missed the cut in each of his past two U.S. Open starts. In fact, Palmer’s been miserable in majors, missing the cut in four of the eight that he’s qualified for since 1998. But he did take 10th in the 2011 Masters, and that may be a good omen for this week’s task at Congressional. Palmer has made three birdies and no bogeys in his first round so far.
Palmer is a stroke clear of Swede Johan Edfors, 2-under through 13 holes, and Jonathan Overton, 2-under through 11 holes. Chez Reavie, at 1-under, is the clubhouse leader at Congressional, and the only player to have finished his first round in red numbers.
Defending champion Graeme McDowell has also been good early, and is 1-under through 14 holes. Phil Mickelson, seeking his first U.S. Open title, tees off at 1:35 p.m. Eastern.
