It’s been a little more than two months since his collapse at the Masters, and Rory McIlroy is looking to prove that it is now a distant memory. The 22-year old from Northern Ireland is destroying the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club, building a 10-shot lead in the second round.
2011 U.S. Open Leaderboard Update: Rory McIlroy Continues Torrid Start At Congressional
After shooting a 4-under on the front nine, including an eagle on No. 8, McIlroy continued his torrid pace with three more birdies on the back nine, holes 14, 16 and 17. For the day, he’s now 7-under thru 17, and is an astounding 13-under for the tournament. McIlroy’s closest competitor is Y.E. Yang, who is nine shots back (he begins his second round at 1:35 p.m. ET).
Just how good has McIlroy been so far? ESPN aired a graphic earlier noting McIlroy’s 12-under matches Tiger Woods’ 12-under at Pebble Beach in 2000 for the most strokes under par at any point in U.S. Open history. And then he birdied No. 17 to go 13-under. So, yeah, that good.
In addition to Yang, others chasing McIlroy include Robert Garrigus, Sergio Garcia and Zach Johnson, all of whom are part of a five-way tie for third place at 2-under. Phil Mickelson has rebounded after a rough opening round and is 4-under thru 17 on Friday, and 1-under for the tournament.
