Heritage Classic Leaderboard: Americans Dominate First Round Leaderboard, Led By Chad Campbell And Vaughn Taylor

Harbour Town presented a stiff challenge in round one of the RBC Heritage Classic on Thursday afternoon in Hilton Head, S.C., with windy morning conditions and a firm and fast course. The leaderboard is full of American golfers, with many internationals taking off the week after the Masters. But Harbour Town is still one of the pros’ favorite stops on tour, with many pleading for a last-minute sponsor last year to rescue this venerable tournament.

Americans and Ryder Cup vets Chad Campbell and Vaughn Taylor currently lead after rounds of 67 tied them for first at 4-under. Campbell is renowned for going on hot streaks, and he had five birdies on the front side, going out in 32 before evening out on the back side. Taylor tied Campbell by sinking a sand wedge from 100 yards on his last hole for an eagle on No. 9. He got hot with the putter, stroking an astounding 20 putts in his first round.

Jim Furyk, who won the Heritage two years ago, is just one shot off the lead. Rookie Harris English, the enormously talented Georgia alum who won on the Nationwide Tour last year as an amateur, is also one shot back with one hole to play. Swashbuckling South Carolinian Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey is at 1-under, joined by John Daly who shot an unexpected 70. No. 1 player in the world Luke Donald, who lost in a playoff at Harbour Town last year, had a disappointing first round and sits at 4-over.
