Masters leaderboard 2013: Jason Day, Brandt Snedeker share lead at 7-under

Brandt Snedeker has hit a streak with his putter, chasing down Jason Day on the back side at Augusta.

Amen Corner shook up the leaderboard significantly on moving day, as the final groups shifted down by Rae’s Creek at Augusta National. When the last pairing went through, it was Jason Day who emerged with a two-shot lead at 7-under. Day had carded nothing but pars through his first 12 holes, but the easier par-5 13th hole presented his first good birdie chance of the afternoon. He got home in two and managed to easily two-putt for the red number, taking the mutli-shot lead as Angel Cabrera fell apart ahead of him.

Day’s solo two-shot lasted only a few holes, however, with Brandt Snedeker making a late move to jump up to 7-under. Snedeker was the best player in the world through the first month of the season, but took time off and worked through an injury recently. He’s maybe the best putter in the world, and he’s hot with that club now on the second nine at Augusta, picking up four birdies coming in to the house.

Cabrera is one of the more volatile players in the field, and can go on a hot streak or get into a mess anytime. He quietly jumped into sole possession of the lead at 7-under on No. 10, but was a victim at Amen Corner and gave two shots back. Cabrera was lucky to get bogey on No. 12 after going into the bunker, and then made a bad bogey on the No. 13. That par-5, as Day demonstrated, is almost a must-birdie for any big moving-day march, but a bogey is almost inexcusable.

Cabrera’s two-shot drop enabled Adam Scott to move into sole possession of second place. Scott is another Aussie who’s had mutliple close calls here but failed to break that curse. It’s not surprising to see him near the top of the leaderboard, but he and Day will have the weight of Austrailia on them on Sunday.

Here is a snapshot of where the leaders and a few notables stand:
