John Daly, perhaps giving voice to fears about his own faded PGA Tour career, believes two old race horses battling for their PGA Tour careers -- Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson -- have not crossed their last finish lines.
John Daly says ‘Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods aren’t done yet’
Tiger and Phil are clearly on the back nines of their careers, but John Daly -- still plugging away trying to win back his PGA Tour card -- believes ‘his guys’ could actually beat Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth.
“Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods aren’t done yet,” Daly said on CSNChicago.com on Friday before serving beers at U.S. Cellular Field in lieu of throwing the ceremonial first pitch when the game was rained out. “I’ve seen both regiments and they’re both beautiful human beings. They both are artists and they both practice really hard like I do.”

— GIASI Beverage Co (@GIASIbeverages) May 8, 2015 Recent facts do not exactly support Daly’s contention. Mickelson made an early exit from this week’s Players Championship wondering how he “actually won here [in 2007].”
Woods, with his game in complete shambles yet again, made the cut on the number with a clutch putt on his final hole on Friday but proceeded to make a mess of TPC Sawgrass on Saturday. SB Nation’s Brendan Porath has all the ugly details.
Woods, uncharacteristically, declined to speak with the media after an abysmal 3-over 75 in his third round that effectively ended on the second hole. Another of his patented yanks led to the first of two double-bogeys on par-5 holes -- a personal worst for the two-time Players champion.
This is Tiger's 1,116th career @PGATOUR round as a pro It's the 1st time he's made multiple double bogeys on par 5s in same round
— Justin Ray (@JustinRayGC) May 9, 2015 If there were any doubt that Woods’ game -- which was sturdy enough through three days at Augusta -- was not ready for prime time, he was among the dew sweepers on Sunday with an 8:55 a.m. ET tee time.
While Daly, who has not won a tour event since 2004, praised the games of those representing golf’s next generation, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth, he somehow believes the old guys can muster up enough to kick their butts.
“I still feel that if you put Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson against Jordan Spieth and McIlroy, I think my guys are going to beat them,” Daly said. “That’s my guys, I love them to death.”
At least Tiger and Lefty have that going for them.
