An auspicious beginning to the Indianapolis 500 featured a multi-car wreck on the very first lap and a couple of drivers making contact under the yellow flag.
2015 Indy 500 live results: ‘Bonehead move’ slows race on Lap 1
The Indianapolis 500 is off to a harried start.
The trouble began when Takuma Sato attempted a brazen outside pass of Sage Karam between Turns 3 and 4. In the aftermath Sato, Karam and Ryan Briscoe all sustained damage, with Karam forced to retire after clobbering the SAFER barrier.
“I don’t know what Sato’s doing,” Karam said. “Kind of a bonehead move. He sees me and (Ryan) Hunter-Reay side-by-side and the very first lap he’s trying to make it three-wide. I just don’t get it. ... I mean, just a very stupid move on his part.”
More problems followed as the field circled under caution when Simona de Silvestro ran into the rear of Juan Pablo Montoya’s car, breaking his right-rear wing and wheel guard. Montoya pitted for repairs and continued without further incident.
A year ago the Indianapolis completed a race-record 149 laps without a caution.
Prior to the start, Alex Tagliani‘s car wouldn’t fire and needed a push start, while Conor Daly’s race end on the pace lap when his car began smoking due. An exhaust failure was the culprit, ABC reported.
