Carles Puyol out 8 weeks with a dislocated elbow

Barcelona confirmed today in their website that their captain Carles Puyol will miss eight weeks with a dislocated left elbow.

Carles Puyol is facing eight weekends out after suffering a dislocated left elbow in Barcelona's Champions League win against Benfica on Tuesday.

The Barca captain landed awkwardly in the 75th minute and was carted off the pitch holding his arm against his body and clearly in pain. Reports came out last night about the elbow, but the injury was made official today on the club’s website:

“The club captain will undergo conservative treatment and is expected to be out for about eight weeks.”

Puyol was released from the hospital last night and traveled home with the team. He did provide an update on Twitter as well, saying he was already back in Barcelona and thanking everyone who looked after him in Portugal. He thanked fans for the messages as well.

Assuming his recovery goes well, Puyol could return sometime in December, which puts his status for the club's Champions League double-header against Celtic in doubt. He'll also miss this weekend's El Clasico as Barca hosts Real Madrid at the Camp Nou.
