There’s a little more than six weeks until the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and the Olympic torch continues to make its way around the world. The torch made history this week when the relay passed through Ireland. It was the first time it had ever been to Dublin and crowds that went several deep lined the streets to get a glimpse. Pat Hickey, president of the Olympic Council of Ireland, emphasized the importance of having the torch move through the republic. Via Olympic.org:
Olympic Flame Makes First-Ever Visit To Dublin
“We will never have the Olympic Games in Dublin and the nearest we are ever going to come to it is the London Games, so to have the torch relay on our part of the island is quite unique and historical. I think in years to come people will look back and say, ‘that must have been great’.”
In what was a day of civic pride, Ireland Prime Minister Enda Kenney and President Michael D. Higgins came out to greet the relay through Dublin. After the visit in Dublin, the torch eventually traveled to Northern Ireland, where their government held a celebration in Belfast.
