Kansas City Royals reliever Danny Duffy thought he notched a pivotal strike against San Francisco Giants outfielder Gregor Blanco in the fourth inning of Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday. Home plate umpire Jerry Meals thought otherwise, calling a 2-1 curveball that appeared to be in the strikezone a ball.
Danny Duffy not sure where he missed
There’s been a lot of that tonight.
That elicited this reaction from Duffy, who eventually walked Blanco to allow the Giants’ fifth run to cross the plate:
Meals hasn’t had the best luck calling balls and strikes, so Duffy is probably on to something there.
I mean... Jerry Meals. Wow. pic.twitter.com/fhMYgrl8QL
— Shaun Newkirk (@Shauncore) October 22, 2014 Duffy issued a pair of walks but allowed only the one inherited run to score in his first two innings relieving starter James Shields. Duffy walked two of the first three batters he faced before settling down, and one former big league pitcher has a theory as to why:
That's on Yost. Got Duffy up late. Didn't get much time to get ready.
